Leaving fallen timber intact and in place reduces both the effort and cost associated with woodland management and provides a significant gain in dead wood habitat (DWH) for a minimal investment. Here are ways to maximise the effect of dead wood. Avoid unnecessary tidying and leave high stumps where possible. A small amount of tidying and similar intervention (eg for visitor safety) is not necessarily detrimental to DWH if undertaken thoughtfully. Retain old features and avoid unnecessary distrubance of areas with good quality DWH.
