Ash do not often live long enough to qualify as ancient or veteran trees but Terry Mabbett examines a rare survival in Hertfordshire. There is a very old common ash (Fmxinus excelsior) in a tree-studded meadow in Potters Bar alongside the 'Great NorthRoad' (A 1000) in the County of Hertfordshire. The tree stands proud as a native monument fighting for life on the Morven Park Estate, owned by the National Trust since 1930 and a gateway from Potters Bar town into the rolling Hertfordshire countryside.
