Dear Letters Editor, It's not only tropical forests that need our protection in the effort to reduce CO_2 emissions [This refers to a Guardian article from ig February, Bigger trees helping the fight against climate change]. Large-canopy trees closerto home have a crucial part to play. The plane trees on the forecourt of The Guardian's recently vacated Farringdon Road headquarters are an excellent example of the importance of big trees hi our cities. These thirty-year-old planes are currently underthreat of felling to make way for a new development. The site's new owner has offered to replace them with f astigiate oaks with a canopy-spread of around 1.5 metres compared to the planes' current 15m-crowns.
