For many years my grandparents lived near Danby on the North York Moors where I spent a lot of time playing blissfully at Rowantree Farm, five minutes' walk away. Rowantree was, and still is, a busy small Dales dairy farm, the outbuildings clinging closely to the stone farmhouse and the farmhouse clinging to the lower slopes of Danby Rigg. It is a beautifully composed marginal setting, above the lush open end of Danby Dale, with the purple heather rising behind it.
