WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T CALL IT WOODWORKING. Woodworking, a highly skilled trade and profession in its own right, tends to involve movement from the woodworker, yet the material itself remains stationary, perhaps clamped in a vice. Woodturning is, in asense, the other way round. Not only does it require a steady hand, it requires a rapidly moving lathe. The art is based on a similar principle to that offered by a potter's wheel. The wood is attached to the lathe which rotates it, allowing the woodturner, by pressing a chisel, gouge or other tool against it, to form intricate shapes, patterns and designs.
