摘要

Peter Woods describes his experiences in restoring and maintaining alder coppice to create a sustainable source of heating fuel for his home. Common British alder (Alnus glutinosa) has a long history of being a useful timber to grow on wetter ground (the wetter the better, in fact). It coppices easily and is unpalatable to rabbits and deer, so no need to protect the coppice stools. It grows fast, almost as quickly as native willow. We came to our present abode in North Yorkshire in 1974. It had 20 acres (8ha) with it, about eight of which were neglected, under-grazed woodland. The prominent tree species was multi-stemmed, mature alder, growing where springs kept the ground wet. There was plenty of evidence of repeated attempts to channel the springwater into stone drains, but we soon learned by experience that alders and drains don't mix! Local tradition was that the woodland had been a managed alder coppice for the purpose of making clogs for miners and farm labourers. No doubt it could have been used also for charcoal-making, and therefore possibly for gunpowder manufacture too. A more modern use, we are told, is in the manufacture of electric guitars. Its density is such that it has a particularly pleasant resonance.
