Autumn is the final change of the year when plants respond to the turbulence and turmoil around the autumn equinox with deciduous trees as the main players. It is a time of mixed emotion with relief and thanks for a bountiful harvest but sadness for lost summer days, sharpened by fear of encroaching winter. The three-month event gathers pace during September, reaches a crescendo in October and is choked off in November. Robert Bridges described each stage without the melodramatic melancholy of much autumn inspired poetry and prose.
