摘要

Tony Spencer considers the effect of brambles and other factors on regeneration of western red cedar in his woodland. In Kilbum Thicket, a small (12ha) detached wood in North Yorkshire, compartment 1 (4ha) is a 41 year old plantation of western red cedar undergoing 'transformation' to a group shelterwood system (Spencer, 2007). Following a heavy thinning to open up the overstorey, the lop and top was cleared to encourage natural regeneration, but bramble has come in strongly since. Overall success is largely dependent on adequate regeneration, but this in turn depends on several factors: the supply of viable seed, the ground conditions, the vegetation, and seed predation and browsing by wildlife of all kinds.
