I was asked the question: what is that odd-looking tree in Motcombe Park with the strange-looking fruit? It s an apple tree, said one. No, it's a pear tree said another. The boy presented me with a leaf and I began to wonder. Curiosity got the better of me, and the very next day I set off to Motcombe to see for myself. Motcombe Park was part of a farmyard owned by the ninth Duke of Devonshire up until 1908-1909, when he gave the land to the town of Eastbourne. The pond in the middle of the park is the source of the Bourne stream, from which East Bourne got its name.
