In the UK, afforestation and restocking are generally achieved by planting nursery-grown stock with direct sowing regarded as a poor substitute. The purpose of this study, conducted in Bangor, Wales, was to compare the survival, growth and form of sessile oak (Quercus petraea) seedlings produced by direct sowing in treeshelters (shelters) with that of planted stock. Four treatments were used: open grown 1u1 plants, 1u1 plants in shelters, acorns dropped on the soil surface within shelters and acorns sown 5 cm below the soil surface within shelters. Growth, form and survival/germination data were collected after two years. Differences in survival between treatments were not significant and indicated that, when protected by shelters, direct sowing is comparable to planting. Acorns sown at a depth of 5 cm produced plants with the largest mean shoot height (79 cm), but there was no significant differences in root collar diameter between treatments. Root:shoot dry weight ratios were significantly larger in the planted stock than in the directly sown seedlings.
