Gabriel Hemery and Peter Savill summarise the international conference, Better Trees, Better Profits, held at RASE Stoneleigh, as the Royal Forestry Society N.D.G. James Memorial Event on 4th March 2004. The conference was opened by Susan Bell, ChiefExecutive of the National Forest Company and Vice-President of the RFS, welcoming 90 delegates from Europe and the USA She explained how the British and Irish Hardwoods Improvement Programme (BIHIP) had its origins in the RFS conference at Edgebaston in1991. She emphasised that there have never been problems in selling high quality timber profitably, and suggested that a 'kite marking' scheme should be introduced for quality nursery stock.
