摘要

Effects of deer herbivory on coppice re-growth, bramble (Rubus fruticosus) cover and ground vegetation are examined in a semi-natural deciduous woodland in southern England, using fenced exclosures and controls in each of six coppice compartments in their 2nd to 4th summer of regrowth. Both height and stool circumference of coppice re-growth were reduced. Ash (Fraxinus excelsior), hazel (Cory/us avellana) and downy birch (Betula pubescens) suffered from browsing, while alder (Alnus glutinosa) was not affected. Bramble cover was substantially reduced overall, but effects varied between compartments. Ground vegetation species richness and diversity were significantly greater in grazed controls than in ungrazed exclosures.
