Westonbirt Arboretum's Phil Morton describes his visit to West Africa to see the work of UK-based forestry charity Tree Aid and learn about the research that is helping ordinary farmers to replace the trees lost during droughts of the past 30 years. We spent a week travelling through the arid Sahel - the strip of land separating the savannah from the southern Sahara. The Sahel takes its name from the Arabic word for shore as the desert's edge fluctuates back and forth like the sea. This zone is subject to increasing desertification and trees such as the ones planted by Tree Aid are playing a vital role in the fight against environmental degradation.
