The idea of small woodland-based businesses located in and built of timber from the woods themselves seems a common sense answer to creating low impact and sustainable rural jobs. Yet many would-be woodlanders are thwarted by the planners. Clare Ferguson calls for a rethink of planning policy. The current planning situation in England and Wales is stifling the creation of the small-scale local businesses that could form a sustainable forestry industry. Government rhetoric is full of commitments to asustainable future for the countryside, local employment, biodiversity, low-impact development, affordable housing and so on, but while ministers talk, local authorities must enforce planning regulations that prevent any of this occurring.
