摘要

The Society's Randle Travel Fund enabled Jenny Greaves to travel to the People's Democratic Republic of Laos to gain a better understanding of the issues surrounding the forestry of teak. Teak (Techtona grandis) is an important timber that is desiredacross the globe, The natural teak forests of the Asia Pacific region are under pressure With the help of the RFS Randle Travel Fund I was able to travel to the People's Democratic Republic of Lao (Lao PDR) to study the threats to the teak forests, and the policies and management regimes that are being implemented to curb the destruction of these ecologically important native forests. This article gives a general overview of the ecology of teak and why is such a desirable timber, before going on to discuss the situation in Lao PDR, specifically looking at how the government is trying to give local people more responsibility in managing the teak forests. The article will finish with a description of some underwater teak loggers that I came across working in the Any Nam Ngum Lake.
