In 1994, sessile oak 1+1 transplants of British provenance were pit planted in an experiment to investigate the effects of formative pruning, hoop pruning, stumping back, 0.6m treeshelters and 1.2m treeshelters on early growth and form. After eight growing seasons, the stem diameter of hoop pruned trees, stumped back trees and trees grown in 1.2m treeshelters was significantly lower than that of control trees. Trees grown in 1.2m treeshelters has a significantly greater stemibranch volume ratio thantrees in other treatments. None of the treatments affected tree form.
