I am both honoured and surprised to have been asked to be the next president of The Royal Forestry Society. Over the next two years I look forward to visiting many Divisions and learning about the wide variety of forestry and woodland that exists in England and Wales, and I hope to meet as many of our members as possible. My introduction to forestry came rather late in life shortly after my return from Canada to live in Northern Ireland in the mid 1970s to work for the National Trust. Fortunately myfather advised me to become a member of the Royal Forestry Society, which successfully kindled my enthusiasm and subsequent interest in trees. In 1978 I joined the Northern Ireland Division, and since then, at our meetings and our visits to many interesting areas of planting and mature woodland, I have been impressed by the great depth and scope of knowledge that exists within our membership.
