摘要

Randle Travel Fund bursery recipient, Peter Chappell, describes the opportunity he had to study a parasitic nematode of the sirex wood wasp and its possible interactions with sapstain fungi in South African pine plantations. During 1998 I visited theforests of Malawi and ever since had the urge to make a return trip to Africa. It was with great delight therefore that my MSc 'Forest Protection and Conservation' supervisor, Prof Julian Evans, made an introduction for me to study in South Africa and Isuccessfully obtained funding from the RFS Randle Travel Fund. The position was working at the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI) which is a part of the University of Pretoria in the north east of the country, and conducts much forest pathology research. The aim was to do some research for my MSc project, which I completed with Imperial College at Silwood Park In the end I was offered work on sapstain (blue stain) and possible interactions with a parasitic nematode of the sirex wood wasp Sirex noc tilio Fabricius (Hymenoptera: Siricidae).
