Dead and decaying wood is one of the most important elements of a woodland from a biodiversity perspective (Elton, 1966), but frequently scarce in modern British woodland (Kirby et. al., 1998). Tree diseases play an important role in helping to createthis resource both in woods and in trees in the wider countryside. Dying trees contribute to the formation of gaps in the woodland canopy (Peterken, 1996), so allowing more light and warmth to reach the forest floor and thus contributing to the overalldiversity of the wood.
