The influence of oak [Quercus] standards on the growth of hazel coppice was investigated by observing the size of stools, and shoots of three ages, growing under and away from overstorey canopy cover in the UK. Location had an important influence onstool characteristics; those under the canopy had smaller girths and fewer stems, the tallest of which had smaller diameters than those on stools away from overstorey canopy cover. Average height of the tallest stems was also reduced with those 4-year-olds' being 25% shorter when growing under the canopy. The implications of these results for management of coppice with standards are briefly discussed.
