In the last few years a new acronym 'PAWS' has entered many forestry discussions: Plantations on Ancient Woodland Sites. Emma Goldberg explains the importance of PAWS and summarises the ongoing research into its restoration. A ncient woodland is defined as woodland that has existed since 1600 AD, and in the 1980s the Nature Conservancy Council undertook to map the resource in the Ancient Woodland Inventory. However, the definition was broken down into two different types, ancient semi-natural woodland, and plantations on ancient woodland sites. The latter has developed interest in forestry discussions and given rise to the new acronym, PAWS.
