This year's RFS Whole Society Meeting started on a high - high on the northern flanks of the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Somerset at the Iron Age hillfort and later Norman castle of Neroche. Taking its name from the royal hunting forest, which had slightly different boundaries, Neroche was for over 500 years in the ownership of the Portman family before passing to the Crown in 1947. Its lOOOha are now leased to the Forestry Commission and over the last seven years have beenthe focus of a high-profile landscape-scale initiative, known as the Neroche Scheme. With initial funding from the Heritage Lottery, the Scheme encompassed a wide programme of nature conservation management, community archaeology, public access development, forest schools development, public arts and community engagement. Combining this with the management of a wide range of woodland types, including commercial spruce and ancient semi-natural woodland, had taken the FC into novel territory, explained Rod Leslie as he welcomed members to the forest, as it involved management not just of the trees but of open space, as well as community history, arts and education projects.
