摘要

Few topics evoke stronger emotions in horticulturists than flower color: Some people hate orange, and others find pastels too pallid for words. Yet there is a color that provides the impact of orange and passes muster with the color police: Salmon. If salmon is the color you seek, twinspurs (Diascia spp.)--a genus of annual and tender perennial wildflowers from South Africa may be just the ticket. They manifest the color salmon in all its subtlety and variation, much as delphiniums and gentians epitomize the colorblue. Starting at the sunrise end of orange, twinspurs range through tangerine, mango, peach, apricot, and dozens of other fruity shades; their colors make me think of sunsettinted sandstone canyonlands and Victorian brickwork. Although relatively new on the gardening scene, twinspurs are quickly catching on among American gardeners.
