摘要

The recently published critical review of translational pain research by Mao10 is thought provoking and raises a number of important points. Mao calls for innovative research approaches through bidirectional translational efforts to improve clinical pain management. There is much to agree on. And yet there is something disappointing about a research agenda presaging that more of the same can solve the current deficiencies but omitting a challenge to address some uncomfortable and inconvenient issues that are staring us in the face. Based on my personal experiences of clinical development challenges with many promising novel analgesics over the past decade, I offer an additional perspective on issues and priorities for filling in the gaps and suggest some specific actions that could be taken immediately.
