The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that obesity now affects 17% of American children and adolescents. Current estimates suggest 43 million children worldwide are overweight or obese, with impact across many health domains leading to both medical and psychosocial conse-quences.For the pediatric hematologist, childhood obesity is notable for its association with hypercoagulability, and the attendant risks of developing either arterial or venous thrombosis. Exactly how obesity increases the risk of clotting is not fully understood, but the hypercoagulability likely reflects a generalized prothrombotic and proinflammatory state that affects both vascular and endothelial function. Accordingly, the availability of accurate biomarkers for thrombosis among overweight and obese children could be clinically useful, particularly as risk factors for thrombotic events.In this issue of The Journal, Lovely et.al have focused on a variant form of fibrinogen, the most plentiful circulating plasma clotting factor.
