The reaction of powdered NaCI with HNO_3 was studied using Raman spectroscopy. NaNO_3 growth was monitored as a function of HNO_3 exposure in a flow cell. Mode-specific changes in the NO_3- vibrational mode intensities with HNO_3 exposure suggest a rearrangement of the NaNO_3 film with coverage. In the absence of H_2O, intensities of NaNO_3 bands increase with HNO_3 exposure until a capping layer of NaNO_3 forms. The capping layer prevents subsequent HNO_3 from reacting with the underlying NaCI. H_2O exposl,1fe of NaNO_3-capped NaCI results in hydration of the surface to form an aqueous solution containing NaNO_3 and NaCI. Further exposure results in the formation of a thicker surface-adsorbed H_2O layer that is consistent with an aqueous NaNO_3 and NaCI solutjon. Upon exposure of hydrated NaCI to HNO_3. molecular HNO_3 and solid-state NaNO_3 are observed in the thin H_2O film.
