Still in the early 1980s diagnostic tests were using directly coated tubes, particles, or microtiter plates as solid phases. At that time coating was examined more qualitatively, incubation time was long (several hours), and sensitivity was generally lower than today. In the mid 1980s SA~1 entered the clinical lab to replace directly bound antibodies and antigens as matrices. In the hematology labs FACS equipment (fluorescence activated cell sorter) became standard, and leucocyte typing workshops established the cellular markers. The technology in the field of imaging improved slowly but steadily.
