摘要

I appreciated Dr. Chou and colleagues for their article, "Asthma and risk of erectile dysfunction-a nationwide population-based study" [1]. Their study had explored the association between asthma and risk of developing erectile dysfunction (ED) in adult male patients in Taiwan. However, there are several points deserving further discussion about their database and interpretation.First, their "nationwide" data set analyzed were all patients (people with disease). As pointed out by Dr. Lu, "all the people entered into the dataset had at least one International Classification of Disease (ICD) code assigned by the physicians" [2]. It was a "nationwide" patient pool, not really a population pool. In their control group, the incidence of ED was around 50%, which was inconsistent with the other population-based study in Taiwan [3]. One possible explanation is that Dr. Chou and colleagues analyzed the registered patients, not the population.
