Professor Winfield Dudgeon, an American missionary who came to India was responsible for two benefactions. He was the driving force in founding the Indian Botanical Society (IBS) in 1920 and its journal (JIBS). He was also the first president of the society. He discovered the talented young Panchanan Maheshwari, nurtured him as his own son and gave him the training and opportunity to develop into a disciplined and outstanding scientist. Maheshwari surpassed his mentor's expectations and became a great botanist and teacher.
