Jeffrey Sissons (2010) has recently proposed that Maori hapuu ('subtribes') are not descent groups at all, but rather 'houses' in the old European sense used by Lévi-Strauss to describe what he proposed was a new global kinship type. In arguing this, Sissons challenged the positions of JoanMetge,myself, and others onMaori whaanau ('family' or domestic group) as well as the cognatic descent structure of Maori hapuu, generally accepted since the 1970s. Indeed, he appears to be challenging the ordinary understanding of Maori themselves regarding their contemporary as well as traditional hapuu.
