Mining in British Columbia is booming. More than 1 billion dollars was spent on building new mines and expanding existing operations in 2010. Mineral exploration expenditures rose to 322 million dollars, more than doubling the 2009 figure of 154 million dollars. The preliminary estimate of the value of mineral production is roughly 6 billion dollars. Coal is the province's leading solid mineral commodity by value, accounting for about 3.6 billion dollars or 60% of total value, based on estimated production and average prices. The vast majority of coal produced in the province is metallurgical coal. Copper remains in second place by value, accounting for just under a quarter of solid mineral output by value, followed by molybdenum, gold, aggregates, industrial minerals, and other mineral products such as zinc and silver.
