Gladstone Pacific Nickel's (GPN-T, GPN-L) visionis tobuildanickel-cobalt refinery at the deepwater port of Gladstone, in Queensland, Australia, that would treat high-grade nickel laterite ores from New Caledonia and other Pacific islands, as well as from its own Marlborough deposits.The company says the project could become one of the biggest of its type in the world, producing about 120,000 tonnes nickel per year - about 8 percent to 10 percent of the world's nickel demand - as well as 10,000 tonnes per year of cobalt metal in its first two stages.A new feasibility study suggests the venture would be profitable. The proposed nickel project could earn Gladstone US 625 million dollars in profit after tax in its first year of production, the feasibility study states. That number is based on a gearing ratio of 70 percent debt for a 10-year loan period with an interest rate of 8.5 percent per year.
