The most effective performance reviews empower and inspire staff members. But in many cases, performance reviews have either a neutral or a debilitating effect. In such reviews, dentists or office managers tell staff members what they are doing wrong, or they tell them that they are doing a good job and should keep doing what they are doing. The traditional type of performance review usually is designed to evaluate areas such as attitude, appearance and punctuality. This type of review frequently is scored with numbers between zero and five to indicate a range from poor to excellent. What is missing in this type of review is a means to get the team member's feedback and ideas as to his or her own strengths and weaknesses. How can performance reviews become an empowering experience for your staff? A more productive way to review staff performance is to focus the entire review on one goal: improvement. I believe that most team members would like to understand where they stand and how things can be better. The following discussion outlines ways in which changing the focus can accomplish that objective.
