The Nobel Assembly of the Karolinska Institute awardedthe 2010 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Robert G.Edwards for his pioneering work on in vitro fertilization (IVF).This discovery allowed a novel treatment of infertility in womenand was the groundwork for many innovations in reproductivemedicine, medical genetics, and cell biology. Since 1978 IVF hasbeen very effective in infertile couples who did not have otheralternatives to conceive their own children. In the early 1990s, IVFopened the gateway to preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD),initially for couples at risk of having offspring with heritablediseases. Other genetic studies on IVF embryos highlighted thefrequent occurrence of chromosomal aneuploidies, and morerecently, DNA rearrangements associated with early pregnancylosses.
