As the accumulated steel amount in Korea is to exceed 500 million tons as of end of 2008, it is likely that Korea will be self-sufficient with the steel scrap from 2009. The accumulated tonnage of steel at the end of 2002 was 356,650 thousand tons, 24,790 thousand tons more than that of a year earlier. According to the statistics by Korea Iron & Steel Association, last year the steel consumption was 45,584 thousand tons, scrap purchasing was 12,580 thousand tons, indirect export of steel was 9,352 thousand tons, and indirect import of steel was 1,141 thousand tons, resulting in net accumulation of 24,793 thousand tons.
