In the international market for steel scrap, China is working as a considerably large variable. China reportedly bought 9 cargos of steel scrap May 16 in addition to its purchase of 11 cargos at the beginning of the month. An official of trading sources said Chinese steelmakers bought steel scrap May 16 at the price between 162.50 U.S. dollars and 165 U.S. dollars (based on Shreded) per ton, which exceeded the 155 U.S. dollars level (based on HMS No.1) when converted into the import price for Korea. Such a purchase in large volume after the previous 11 cargos in Chinas recent imports of steel scrap was mainly due to unstable demand and supply conditions of steel scrap in the local market in China in the wake of the SARS outbreak, in addition to the judgment that it is more easy and convenient to buy steel scrap from abroad rather than at home, as the complicated procedure of documentation for local transportation of steel scrap necessary for the purchase from the home market is more burdensome.
