Thus, they are expected to be reborn as the world's second-largest steelmaker, in terms of crude steel production, in October 2012 when they will finish their merge. In 2009, Nippon Steel produced 27.61 million tons of crude steel, staying at the world's sixth-largest steelmaker, while Summitomo Metal ranked 23rd among global steelmakers with the annual crude steel output of 10.81 million tons.
