Price negotiation for the imports of Japanese plates for domestic shipbuilding in the first half (shipments in the April-September period) of this year is reportedly entering the final stage. Domestic shipbuilding firms, who have much difficulty from the beginning of the negotiation due to a strenuous request by Japanese blast furnace steelworks for an unrealistic price increase, are said to have only one step left for the final price compromise with the Japanese steelmakers in the negotiation. Japanese blast furnace steelworks asked their price to be increased by 50 U.S. dollars per ton, while Korean shipbuilders has taken the position that they are unable to accept it by any means because such a price hike would not only make the import price of Japanese plates much higher than the market price of domestic products in Korea, but also bring about a considerably heavy cost burden on domestic shipbuilders.
