Capacity utilization rate of reinforcing bar and section mills drops to a half of the previous years level. Small-size re-rollers are struggling with the unprecedented raw material shortages As the prices for raw materials such as billets surged and the jitters over the raw material procurement became intensified, most small-size re-rollers except special steel bar makers have reduced their factory operations to a half of last years level. Some of reinforcing bar makers partially suspended the operation of their mills. Since those re-rollers, who turn out their products through heating and rolling semi-finished products such as billets and slabs, rely on imports for the supply of most raw materials unlike electric furnace steelmakers, they have to be quite sensitive to the changes in their business environments. Each firm is cutting their factory operations by rescheduling repair work, introducing five-day workweek system, or reducing shifts. Though the shortage of raw material is cited as the reason, they appear to be bracing up for the unpredictable future.
