The quarterly imports of steel product in January-March top 7 million tons for the first time. Imports of steel products in the January-March period sharply increased, hitting an all-time high on a quarterly basis. Not only preponderance to Japan in imports, but also heavy reliance on China for exports in the Korea's first-quarter steel trade of this year was same as ever. The heavy reliance on China for the supply of raw materials such as steel scrap and semi-finished products has been completely exposed as a structural problem of the domestic steel industry since last year. According to the statistics from the Korea Iron & Steel Association on the nation's exports and imports of steel products in the first quarter of 2004, the total imports of steel products in the first three-month period posted 7,002,000 tons, exceeding the 7,000,000 tons for the first time on a quarterly basis. This figure was up 16.9 percent from 5,991,000 tons in the identical period of 2003.
