Both production and sales of steel pipes showed severe sluggishness in May, recording poor performance. According to the statistics from the Korea Iron & Steel Association (KOSA), monthly production and sales of domestic steel pipes in May posted 345,000 tons and 306,000 tons, respectively, with a year-on-year drop of 1.5 percent and 6.9 percent. Compared with March when the monthly production hit a record high with a price increase in April ahead, production of steel pipes in April and May continued to be on the decrease for two consecutive months due to the flat sales. In domestic sales, the selling price for steel pipes for structural purpose failed in applying a rise to the market in April and then even such attempt of steel pipe makers disappeared in May, making them suffer from a double-pain of a price fall and anemic demand.
