摘要

The idea that jeans or t-shirts are grown before they are made can be quite abstract when we are shopping for clothes. Yet the impact of the choices we make every time we buy a new outfit will be felt by some of the millions of people around the worldwho are involved in growing and producing cotton. To make sense of this, I was lucky enough to meet some of the people behind our clothes when I spent 16 days in India last November. With four states and dozens of factories and farms to visit, and 3,000miles to travel, our journey was mammoth. We started in Bangalore, Karnataka - known mostly as an IT hub - where we visited India's largest shirt factory, Bombay Rayon. The factory employs over 8,000 workers, and has achieved both organic and social certification. As we toured the site, manager Mr Rameswamy explained the positive benefit of meeting these standards. 'It is by making working conditions good that we have been able to attract and keep the best staff,' he said. 'This increases productivity, and also the quality.' The staff cetainly seemed relaxed, and the factory was clean and orderly.
