Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) have no place in organic production systems at the moment, says a statement by the Board of the United Kingdom Register of Organic Food Standards (UKROFS). The statement covers the use of GMOs in crops, animals, food ingredients and processing aids, including enzymes such as genetically-engineered rennet which has been approved by the Vegetarian Society. Lawrence Woodward director of Elm Farm Research Association, the organic agricultural research charity, says that there has been considerable pressure not to exclude GMOs categorically from the organic regulations. "Those who want biotechnology are fighting like hell to avoid any exclusion whatsoever," he says.
