The advent of a new technology may herald the demise of an existing modality, as exemplified by stents' replacing balloon angioplasty. More often, the new technology finds its niche, as dictated by evolving guidelines, which invariably lag behind new applications. Increasingly, outcome studies are demanded to demonstrate that a technology saves lives and reduces clinical events in a cost-effective manner. Nowhere is this more pressing than in the evaluation of primary and secondary prevention populations for the presence and extent of coronary artery disease.
