Female channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) were induced to spawn, using carp pituitary extract, either singly in the presence of channel catfish males (males present) or with several other females (males absent). There was no difference between the ovulation rates of females induced to spawn in the presence or absence of channel catfish males. More eggs were obtained by hand-stripping per kilogram of body weight from females with males absent (4585) than from females with males present (2942). When females in the males-present treatment group deposited eggs the number of eggs available for stripping was reduced. There was no difference in fertilization rate between treatments when spermatozoa from blue catfish (I. furcatus) were used. Females which ovulated with males absent produced a number of viable eggs per kilogram of female body weight similar to that produced by females which ovulated with males present (3809 and 2291 respectively).
