A two-step procedure was used to determine if the contact herbicide endothall affected the ability of smelting coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch to survive in the marine environment. Thirty healthy smelts were first exposed to 5.0 mg endothall/L in freshwater for 96 h, then challenged with seawater for 24 h. Blood plasma sodium was measured as an indicator of the smelts' ability to osmoregulate. Mean plasma sodium concentrations did not differ substantially between exposed (170.7 meq/L) and control (170.9 meq/L) groups. These concentrations are consistent with those reported for fully smelted coho salmon following a 24-h seawater challenge.
