Global high-carbon ferro-chrome/charge chrome production surged to a new high of around 2.3m tonnes in the first quarter of 2011. Ferro-chrome producers were encouraged by rebounding demand from stainless steel mills early in the year, with a rush of purchasing driving spot market prices higher, and lending positive sentiment to second-quarter charge chrome contract price negotiations. South African charge chrome producers successfully negotiated a $0.10/lb increase in second-quarter contracts, boosting prices to $1.35/lb, but prices have since declined. The rapid run-up in global ferro-chrome output surpassed actual end-use demand, with ferro-chrome consumption estimated at 2.1m tonnes in the first quarter of the year. Much of the surplus ferro-chrome supply has gone into inventories, with ferro-chrome stocks now bloated throughout the supply chain. Ferro-chrome producers maintained elevated output levels early in the second quarter, though by May, persistent downward pricing pressure and sluggish demand prompted an array of announcements from ferro-chrome producers in South Africa, Turkey, and Sweden of plans to slash production from June.
