If, like me, you've worked at reference desks for a good part of your career, then you know that the most serious challenge confronting reference librarians has nothing to do with answering difficult reference questions. What's really difficult is finding a good way to capture the multitude of information that flows through the reference department, and devising a good way to effectively share it with all those who need that information for their work. In many of our libraries those who need the information can include a diverse group of individuals from the head of the department to part-time assistants. Consider the assignment that requires some special reference material or on-the-spot instruction; everyone needs to be ready to help students with that question.
