Niche search engines, such as RefSeek, INFOMINE, Quintura, Wolfram Alpha, DOAJ, and OAIster, are valuable tools used to help novice researchers find resources. Niche engines have features similar to paid subscription databases, including preselected material, faceted searching, subjects and search tags, sorting, and the ability to save searches, but are free of charge and accessible to all users. Niche searching provides novice researchers with support or "scaffolding" as they learn more about their topic and evaluate their sources. These niche search engines increase the visibility of appropriate sources and decrease the number of invalid results that can hide useful sources.
