Subtropical South Florida is, in many ways, a botanist's dream: Our flora is a melting pot of plants from both the continental United States to the north and the tropical Caribbean to the south. The remaining fragments of pine rockland forests, thoughcritically imperiled, are still home to dozens of endemic plant species. If these features were not awe-inducing enough, we are also home to a treasure trove of fern diversity. Florida, in fact, has more fern species than any other state in the continental U.S., and, believe it or not, close to half of Florida's fern diversity is found right here in Miami-Dade County.
